How much magnesium per day? Australian reference values.
The NHMRC Nutrient Reference Values give different recommended dietary intakes for adults by age and sex. They also give a separate upper level for magnesium from supplements. Those two figures answer different questions.
Total daily intake
Recommended dietary intake for adults.
An RDI is a reference for total daily intake, including food. It is not an instruction to obtain the full amount from a supplement.

SUPPLEMENTS
Upper level: 350 mg a day from supplements for adults.
NHMRC lists a 350 mg/day upper level for adults aged 19 and over as a supplement. The source says this does not include magnesium naturally occurring in food. The upper level is not a target or a recommended dose. It was set using diarrhoea as the critical endpoint for excess non-food magnesium intake.
These examples show the elemental magnesium printed for one tablet in the checked source. They are label comparisons, not suggested daily intakes. A product's directions may differ from this one-tablet display unit.

Use the reference values for context.
This page reports NHMRC figures and source-backed label entries. It cannot determine an individual's magnesium needs or whether a supplement is appropriate. If you take medicines, have a health condition, or are considering a product whose label unit is near or above the supplement upper level, ask a GP or pharmacist for personal advice.
